Order, Discipline, Justice, & Indulgences
Are not respect and humility natural outcomes of a life which is well ordered and disciplined? When we are told to "Spare Not the Rod Lest You Spoil the Child" - Is it as much an explanation of the need for righteous punishment in God's plan for human development, as it is an admonition for parents? It seems to me that far too many people have little to no understanding that his forgiveness of our sins absolves us of the sin, but not of the temporal debt incurred by that sin.
Therefore, purgatory is required that justice might be done. Indulgences are often misunderstood as well, they offer the opportunity to pay all or part of the temporal debt owed for one's sins. They work in conjunction with the sacrament of reconciliation and not in place of it.
Thus it seems to me that it would follow that the same is necessary in our families - just as noted in the bible - that forgiveness and justice require separate and well defined attention. Because, without addressing them both, we leave openings for the adversary to poison our lives and families, separating us ever further from the Lord.
Love comes into the institution of justice, especially in families. Children may accuse the parents of not loving them, because the parents are the instruments of temporal justice, by divine assignment. However, it is a parent who does not love their child that allows Disorder, Sin, Disobedience, and Injustice to go unaccounted for. Such a person allows for Satan to mold a child into his own defiant image and then uses that child as an instrument to spread his poison into their own families, as well as friends and relations of those families. A parent who loves their child will always do what is necessary to keep them as closely bonded to the Lord, one might do well to remeber the words "As for Me and My House. We Will Serve The Lord".
